About the Work
The 26-year-old Ludwig Metz carried this paperback sketchbook and a pencil with him during a journey from Hessia to Bavaria in the summer of 1848. The studies contained therein, first of religious paintings, then of landscapes and buildings, are rarely dated and only a few places are mentioned. They document visits on the Feldberg in Hessia, in Darmstadt, Nuremberg and in the Allgäu. The drawings seem to be realised quickly and therefore seem more like impressive snapshots, which the artist quickly took down on the way – in contrast to the composed, accurate studies found in other sketchbooks of the studied architect.
