About the Work
Friedrich Metz seems to have rarely used this undated sketchbook. He only drew a few landscape motifs with a pencil and put down sporadic notes. The many blank pages between the individual entries suggest that Metz randomly opened the sketchbook to record what he saw or to write something down. Some of the landscapes seem to suggest southern landscapes ‒ perhaps the sketchbook accompanied Metz on one of his journeys to Italy.
