About the Work

Peter Burnitz drew into this undated, thin sketchbook studies of terrain, plants and trees as well as landscapes with trees and a few houses, sketched some animals, and at the beginning of the book reproduced sculptures of female figures with antique features, which he had apparently seen in the garden of the Palacio Real La Granja de San Ildefonso, the Spanish Versailles. The only two places noted in the book, on pages 8 and 9 recto, also suggest that Burnitz used the sketchbook in the province of Segovia – more precisely in the forests of Valsaín and near the former summer residence of the Spanish kings. He therefore carried the sketchbook with him on his 1848 trip to Spain. He made his drawings mainly with pencil, rarely with black chalk. Many verse pages and some successive pages in the second half of the book were left blank.
