About the Work
This rapidly dashed-off depiction presumably marks the beginning of a pictorial clarification process. The artist has drawn only the mother and child with any precision and shaded them with hatching to give their bodies some solidity. All the other elements of the composition are far sketchier in execution. The suggestion of a façade at the right edge resembles a gabled house—perhaps the allusion is to the Holy House of Mary’s childhood, which is venerated in Loreto.
