About the Work

This study, made explicitly for a painting, shows how Tübke felt his way into the content of a work. He began not with the main subject—here the sacrifice of Isaac—but with the figural groups on either side. Finally, in a loose graphite sketch, he merely alluded to the figure of Isaac bound to a sacrificial stone.
