About the Work

Thought to be from the hand of Johann David Passavant at the time of its acquisition, the drawing was not recognized as a work by Titian until the beginning of the twentieth century. Today it is one of the few dated works on paper whose attribution to Titian is not doubted. Like a drawing in the Berlin Kupferstichkabinett, it served as a study for the panel of Saint Sebastian (1522) in the Averoldi Polyptych for the high altar of the Church of Santi Nazaro e Celso in Brescia. Titian took inspiration for this study from Michelangelo’s sculpture of the Rebellious Slave, executed in 1513.
