About the Acquisition
When the art historian Kurt Schwarzweller died in 1973, thirty-seven years had passed since he first began to work for the Städel Museum. He had been appointed to the post of scientific head of the Department of Prints and Drawings in 1936 at the age of twenty-five under the director Georg Swarzenski. After the end of the Second World War he was also actively involved in the rebuilding of the paintings collection. It was in memory of his outstanding services to the Städel Museum that the long-standing chairman of administration Hermann J. Abs donated this watercolour.
