About the Work

With dabs of paint placed rhythmically one beside the other, Eugenie Bandell captured the flickering play of summer light and shade in front of the Wilhelmsbad in Hanau. The result is a composition distinguished by its rich contrasts and pronounced modernity. The vivid colours and systematic brushwork are characteristic of the artist’s style around 1910. Through her exploration of the French avant-garde as well as Japanese art, Bandell departed entirely from the example of her teacher Wilhelm Trübner and developed an increasingly abstract formal language all her own.
