About the Work

The Sun Worshipper is one of the few surviving works by the Frankfurt sculptor Louise Schmidt. In 1913 she presented it along with other examples of her art at the International Exhibition in Ghent, where she was the only German woman to take part. She depicted the youthful figure in a complex pose. The tensed muscles and curvature of the spine are skilfully rendered and anatomically

precise. The iconography of the sun worshipper as a symbol of an existence close to nature bears a close connection to so-called Lebensreform (life-reform) ideas. Based on a vision of new unity between human beings and nature, this movement had emerged as an antithesis to society’s technologization and industrialization.
