About the Work

The artist achieved a warm atmospheric effect by spreading the red chalk with a damp brush. The scene portrays the moat, access bridge and entry gate of the history-steeped Buren castle complex that, well known in van Rossum’s time, was demolished in the nineteenth century. The depiction is not entirely realistic – the artist will have been more concerned with conveying an idyllic mood.
