About the Work

An artist active in Rome, Morandi here presents us with a sensitive portrayal of the fateful encounter between the Angel Gabriel and the future Mother of God. An almost unbelieving Mary turns somewhat hesitantly towards the divine messenger. The latter figure is distinguished by its spirited, upward-pointing movement. The drawing was highly appreciated, as is evident in its onetime owners, among them famous French collectors of the eighteenth century such as Pierre Crozat and Piere-Jean Mariette.
