About the Work

For centuries, the Binnenhof in The Hague has been the seat of the Dutch parliament; the stadtholder also once had his residence here. Pronk depicted the prominent edifice not as an expression of political power, however, but as a place of social interaction. Men, women and children promenade in the courtyard; further pedestrians and guards are spotted under the arcades. The unadorned but dignified architecture is set in a bright but at the same time sensitive light that brings about a pleasing play of shadows on its façade.
