About the Work

Filippo Bellini carried out the two drawings in connection with a painting on the same subject which he executed for the Franciscan church in Filottrano (Ascona). It is the drawing technique that accounts for the scene’s light-filled appearance. The artist combined fine lines with areas of thin ink applied with a brush. The frequent stops and starts of the pen are characteristic of Bellini’s style.
