About the Work
These panels are among the most important but also most puzzling works of early Netherlandish painting. Parts of a winged altarpiece, they were first attributed to the ‘Master of Flémalle’ on account of their supposed place of origin in the Meuse Valley in Belgium. However, obvious differences between the three paintings make it impossible to ascribe them to a single artist. It is now thought certain that they all came from the workshop of Robert Campin in Tournai, where Rogier van der Weyden also worked around 1430. The exact attribution is disputed even today.
