About the Work

Whereas Lenardi’s depiction bears an affinity to works by Corona in composition and figural arrangement, it departs from that master in its almost splintery drawing style. What we see playing out here is the Old Testament story of the high priest Mattathias and his sons. They killed faithless Jews aspiring to join pagan cults and would become the first saints of the Old Covenant for their deeds.
