About the Work

It is a poignant gesture: Saint Dominic receives the rosary with arms spread in devotion. Having withdrawn almost shily behind the column, his companions form a striking contrast to the putti frolicking gaily at the Virgin’s feet. The drawing has been executed with a sure hand. The lead white applied in places as heightening has oxidized over time, becoming black and compromising the work’s appeal.
