About the Work

Florence was already known for its outstanding scenic performances as far back as the sixteenth century. A new theatre was inaugurated in the town in 1657. The stage productions had the superb composers, librettists, stage and costume designers to thank for their high standards of excellence. Stefano della Bella also designed costumes for such shows; the drawing on view here is presumably a case in point.
