About the Work
A sculpture that is not there. The work 'Think of Manzoni' by artist Erwin Wurm consists only of a white pedestal on which a small selection of paintbrushes has been placed. Next to it are the following handwritten instructions, complete with a sketch: "Sit down on the pedestal and follow the instruction and realize the sculpture ........ think of Manzoni." Piero Manzoni (1933-1963) was an Italian artist to whom the Städel Museum dedicated a major exhibition in 2013. Wurm's work was created for that exhibition; in order to complete it, the visitor is requested to participate actively. He or she is asked to clamp the classic artist's equipment between his or her toes for a minute and to think of Manzoni, thereby completing the 'unfinished' artwork. The time detail ascribes the work to the series of 'One-minute sculptures'.
