Despite its absurdity, the scene is disturbing on account of the readiness for violence it depicts. Surrounded by spectators and willing helpers, the executioner draws back for a mighty blow. The unicorn—described in fairy tales as an aggressive animal—nevertheless awaits its fate like a docile old nag. The composition can be read as a plea for peace.
