About the Work
Ljubov Popova lived to be only thirty-five, but she created such an impressive oeuvre within her short lifetime that she is today regarded as one of the most innovative artists of the twentieth century. This painting belongs to a group of works which became known as architectural paintings. In these works, we see for the first time Popova's increasing abandonment of objects, which eventually led her entirely towards abstraction. The artist consciously abandoned painting in 1921. Inspired by the ideas of the Russian Revolution, she devoted herself from then on to everyday design and stage design, which made theatrical history.
