About the Work

Annibale Carracci has masterfully modelled the figure of Venus, the goddess of love and beauty. The originally blue paper (meanwhile faded) once offered an intermediate shade virtually perfect for bringing out the brighter and darker areas depicting light and shadow and lending the body its sensual quality. Two detail studies accompany the reclining figure, revealing the artist’s search for a convincing pose.
