About the Work

Rapidly executed in the open air, this oil sketch roughly captures the small town and the surrounding hilly landscape in broad, dynamic brushstrokes. The paint has been applied thinly and light and shade are strongly contrasted. Corot created this work in Italy, where he sojourned from 1825 until 1828. His classical training is reflected in the clear composition and harmonious proportions of the pictorial elements. In his attempts to capture the atmosphere of a landscape on canvas, Corot’s early oil sketches served as role models for the Impressionists.
