About the Work
Veils of mist hang over the valley, enveloping the Tyrolean landscape in a light haze and leaving only vague outlines of the blue-grey mountains and snow-capped peaks on the horizon. By blurring the individual picture planes into each other with coarse brushstrokes, Eysen dissolves the different textures of nature into an atmospheric, tonal painting which achieves a high degree of abstraction. The artist was in regular contact with the circle around Wilhelm Leibl and a close friend of Hans Thoma. From the late 1870s onwards he lived a secluded life in Merano, where he produced a large number of landscapes.
