About the Work

This impressive view of the city of Zwolle was intended as an artwork in its own right. It may have been executed for a client who had a connection to the town. A careful inscription beneath the image lists the names of the places and buildings depicted, from the bleach green in the foreground to the high tower of the Church of the Cross, or Kruiskerk, in the back. The bright light creates strong contrasts that model the motifs and account for the striking atmospheric mood.
