About the Work
‘Weekend House’ is the only silkscreen print in Sigmar Polke’s early work, and it serves as pertinent proof of his enthusiasm for the offset raster. Playing off motifs of the everyday and art against each other is key to his artistic strategy. ‘Weekend House’ is based on a greatly enlarged picture taken from the small ads and separated from the background. A splendid flower in red hues attracts the viewer’s attention and dominates the sheet, upstaging the fashionable bungalow – that is to say, the object for sale.
