About the Work

Tübke composed this nocturnal winter scene on tinted paper. He laid out the contours and shadows in graphite, then used white chalk to conjure up a snow-covered stage and the figures on it. The proceedings are inscrutable: A cherub calls out from the sky, sparking apocalyptic associations, but the figures’ pantomimic gestures refuse to gel in a coherent story.
