About the Work

In addition to his social satires and theatre scenes, Cornelis Troost was also highly appreciated for his portraits. This large pastel drawing depicts a bust of a young woman with sprigs of grain in her hair characterizing her as an allegory of summer. The sheet is one of a series of four identically sized drawings representing the four seasons. The Städel Museum also has the associated allegory of spring in its holdings (Inv.-Nr. 2898). “Autumn” and “Winter” are in the collection of the Amsterdam Museum. The works are very likely portraits of four of Troost’s seven daughters.
