Edgar Ende

Edgar Ende was born and raised in Hamburg-Altona. He trained as a decorative painter, then attended the local craftsmen's and applied art school. In 1921 he became a member of the Altona Artists' Association. In the early 1930s he moved to Munich, where he became a member of the 'Munich Secession'. After the Second World War, he was among the co-founders of the Association of Munich Artists and the Neue Gruppe, and took part in the Venice Biennale and numerous group exhibitions. In 1951 he met André Breton in Paris, and helped found the International Surrealists Association, although he soon distanced himself from the French Surrealist circle.
