"Wybrand Hendriks was the son of the sculptor Hendrik Hendriks and Aaltje Claas. He was christened in Amsterdam on 21st June 1744. From 1765 to 1774 he was a member of the Amsterdamse Stadstekenacademie and won several prizes. Already at this time he was employed in Johannes Remmers' factory for wall hangings at the Rozenstraat. There he became friends with Willem Joseph Laquy, who later often supplemented the staffage in his landscape paintings. On 21st November 1774, Hendriks acquired his own factory and a few days later enrolled in the Guild of Saint Luke. Half a year later he married Agatha Ketel, the widow of the former factory owner. In the same year, possibly before his wedding, Hendriks undertook a trip to England together with Hendrik Meyer, which he finished early because of an illness. In 1776 he sold his factory and settled in Haarlem. There he enrolled in the Guild of Saint Luke on 16th July and in the following year became one of the six directors of the Haarlem Drawing Academy. From 1782 to 1785 Hendriks lived in various places: he is documented in Ede and other places in the Veluwe and was temporarily in Amsterdam. After his return to Haarlem he took over the position of the castellan in the Teylers Stichting and the supervision of the Kunstkabinett. He retained these duties until 1819. In addition, he took over other social obligations, so he was one of the regents of the Vrouwe- en Anthonie Gasthuis, a poorhouse, and joined the theatre company ""Leerzam vermaak"". In 1796 he took over a position in the city council and founded a drawing school. In 1822 he was accepted into the Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. Hendriks died on 28th January 1831 and was buried in the Grote Kerk in Haarlem.
Wybrand Hendriks was not only a talented painter, but also a draftsman. His oeuvre includes landscapes and cityscapes, genre paintings and 17th century hunting still lifes. Sometimes he also made copies of works by great painters of the time. As a portrait painter he limited himself to clients from Haarlem."
