Born in Lindau in 1947. Studied at the Hochschule der Künste, Berlin, under Martin Engelmann from 1971 to 1980. From 1984 to 2003 lived in Cologne. 1987 to 2013 professor at the Städel School, Frankfurt am Main. Since 2003 lives and works in Wolfegg, in the Allgäu.
