History

The Städelschule is an academy of fine arts in Frankfurt am Main. Since 1817, it has been committed to an equal, international, experimental and independent artistic education. It is one of the most renowned academies of art in the world.

The Städelschule goes back to a foundation established by Johann Friedrich Städel, a citizen of Frankfurt. In his will of 1815, he donated his art collection and his fortune to the Städelsches Kunstinstitut (Städel Art Institute). Städel prescribed lessons "in architecture and in the sciences related to the arts". From 1817 onwards, this was made possible through scholarships bankrolled by his fortune.

This was supposed to support young people interested in the arts, regardless of their gender, religion or social background. Johann Friedrich Städel did not limit this just to Frankfurt, but he also made studies abroad possible, to "educate students to become useful and employable citizens and artists".
