Biography

Neo Rauch was born in Leipzig in 1960. From 1981 to 1986 he studied painting under Arno Rink at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst (Academy of Fine Arts) Leipzig. Subsequently he was a student of the master class under Bernhard Heisig until 1990. He began working as Rink’s assistant in 1993, and in that same year had his first solo exhibition at the Leipzig gallery Eigen+Art. This was followed by numerous national and international shows. With his puzzling figurative works Rauch is one of the best-known representatives of the New Leipzig School. In 2001 he exhibited at the 49th Venice Biennale, and in 2005 he succeeded Rink at the Leipzig school. In the following year his first retrospective opened in the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg, with roughly eighty works. In 2007 Rauch designed the stained-glass windows for Naumburg Cathedral’s Elisabeth Chapel. The artist lives and works in Leipzig.
