About the Work
Spaces of cold loneliness, placed side by side or piled one on top of the other. Rauch’s is a parallel universe to the one we know, and yet the images are familiar. For his paintings, he has recourse to a stock of motifs drawn from both dream and reality. Not infrequently, his paintings juxtapose fantastical scenes and pictorial material from socialist propaganda, crimes from the past and everyday banality, or supreme moments in art and bizarre dehumanisation. He resists the demise of painting by continuing to dream.
