George Rickey (1907-2002) is considered one of the most important representatives, along with Alexander Calder and Jean Tinguelly, of kinetic art. After studying history and art in Oxford and Paris, he joined the United States Army in 1942 and served for three years as an engineer. He then again devoted himself to the visual arts at the New York Institute of Fine Arts and the Chicago Institute of Design. Rickey was represented at 'documenta' in Kassel three times; his expansive sculptures are found in numerous public squares - in Germany in front of Goethe-Universität in Frankfurt am Main and in front of the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin.
