Rosemarie Trockel was born in Schwerte, Germany, in 1952. From 1974 to 1978 she studied painting at Cologne’s school of arts and crafts, the Werkkunstschule. Since the 1980s she has worked with painting and drawing and made videos, sculptures and objects. She is known for works dealing with feminist themes, criticising the predominance of men in the art world. With knitted pictures and objects, typically associated with women’s work, she has received international recognition. In 1985 the Rheinisches Museum Bonn presented her first museum show. She has since been shown in solo exhibitions in such notable venues as the Reina Sofía in Madrid, the New Museum in New York and the Serpentine Gallery in London. For the 48th Venice Biennale in 1999 she was the first German woman artist to design the German Pavilion, and she was given the same opportunity again in 2013. In addition, in the years 1997 and 2012 she participated in documenta 10 and 13 in Kassel. Trockel lives and works in Cologne.
