About the Work

The attack comes unexpectedly. It is 26 October 1569. As Cardinal Carlo Borromeo of Milan is praying, his assassin approaches—it is the man with a rifle and hat at the right. The cardinal will remain unharmed. The sheet was originally thought to be a work by the well-known Bolognese master Guido Reni, as the inscription beneath the altar shows. It has meanwhile been ascribed to his pupil Simone Cantarini, one of Bologna’s especially productive draughtsmen.
