About the Work
The depiction adheres to the classical scheme of a half-length portrait in three-quarter profile popular in Venice in the late fifteenth /early sixteenth centuries. In the composition as well as in the subject’s attire and bearing, the artist reproduces the typical educated humanist of the Venetian upper classes. The clear contours and precise, delicate hatching create a nuanced play of light and shade. Special attention has been devoted to the highlights in the area of the face, around which the portrait appears to have been developed. This drawing is probably a copy of a now lost portrait painting by Antonello da Messina.
