About the Work
De schreeuw (‘The Scream’) quotes one of the best-known pictorial motifs of Symbolism. Scholte derives the title-endowing motif from one of the four paintings done on that theme by the Norwegian painter Edvard Munch between 1893 and 1910 and brings it back to life in his own painting. The gloomy and uncanny depiction of a tin clown, capable of being wound up and resembling an illustration from a book for children, serves as the creator of the masterpiece done in the painting.
