About the Work
Just like in a ‘film noir’: Berlin by night, expressionist shadows and a mysteriously lit window. It is in stark contrast to the artificial colours in the sulphurous yellow sky and the violet-blue wall. In 1977 Rainer Fetting exhibited his ‘First Painting of the Wall’ at the Galerie am Moritzplatz, which he had founded together with Salomé, Helmut Middendorf and Luciano. The ‘Moritzboys’ would later become famous for their expressive painting and be called Neue Wilde (New Wild Ones). Fetting lived near the wall at the time. This painting is an allegory of life in the divided city.
