Rainer Fetting was born in Wilhelmshaven, Germany, in 1949. After apprenticing as a cabinetmaker he moved to Berlin, where he studied painting under Hans Jaenisch at the art academy, the Hochschule der bildenden Künste. In 1977 Fetting, together with Salomé, Helmut Middendorf and Bernd Zimmer, was a co-founder of the Galerie am Moritzplatz in Berlin, where exhibitions and performances were held. The artists devoted themselves intensively to figurative painting and its potential. In 1978 Fetting attended Columbia University in New York on a scholarship. Since the 1980s Fetting has been represented in numerous group and solo exhibitions at home and abroad, and he took part in the 40th Biennale in Venice. Between 1983 and 1994 he shuttled between Berlin and New York; he now lives and works in both cities.
