About the Work
The sitter looks directly at the observer, with her hands braced against her sides, with an angry expression as if she had been interrupted while washing. The moment seems all too indiscreet, bordering on voyeurism. Hubbuch’s dissecting powers of observation of everyday situations reveal themselves particularly in his nude studies. He produced this one in cartoonishly simplified brushstrokes. Yet, he was probably dissatisfied with the composition and used the other side of the canvas for a new picture of “Marianne in front of the mirror”. Her lively erotic charisma cannot be found there – instead of a lascivious display of the body, nudity appears rather natural.
