About the Work
Paulus van Liender was actually known for the finely detailed topographies he carried out in colour (for example “Lisse near Haarlem” (Inv.-Nr. 3305)). In his late phase, he took to drawing monochrome forest landscapes depicting nature in its wild, unspoilt form. He had a penchant for mighty twisted and gnarled trees, which he portrayed in brush and chalk. Unusually sketchy for the artist’s standards, this drawing may have been executed directly on site.
