About the Work
Konrad Lueg has made a schematic copy of a newspaper photo and coloured it in with poster paints. The faceless players appear woodcut-like and two-dimensional; only their more subtly rendered shoes and hair reference the original. The motif – football – is an element of everyday culture. Influenced by Fluxus and Pop Art, Lueg and Gerhard Richter hosted the legendary ‘Living with Pop’ exhibition in a furniture store in 1963. Beer and cake were provided, while the artists sat in a living room corner. A sarcastic commentary on Germany, the economic miracle nation.
