In 1965, the Tübke paintings on display at the Leipzig District Art Exhibition provoked official disapproval. Feelings of powerlessness and depression are manifest in this precisely drawn composition of the same year. The masked harlequin—a figure the artist himself identified with—appears neither able nor willing to free himself from the trees and branches blown over by the wind.
