About the Acquisition

Shortly before he died, Lambert Maria Wintersberger donated his painting 'Herculaneum' to the Städel Museum. He is one of the most interesting and complex representatives of post-war German painting. Wintersberger started out as a painter of churches and of glass, and soon after moving to the Accademia delle Arti in Florence, he began to attract attention with his figurative Hard Edge painting. After moving to Berlin, he belonged to the legendary Grossgörschen 35 group between 1964 and 1968. They founded a producers' gallery and took their name from their address in Schöneberg. Wintersberger spent the last years of his life until his death in seclusion in an old railway station in Alsace.
