About the Work

Nudes are among the Brücke artists’ most important motifs. Schmidt-Rottluff shows three female nudes reclining on yellow cushions. It is possible that they were not in the studio but, as the title suggests, in a kind of outdoor pavilion – the “Kiosk”. The nervous and small-scale style of the Brücke years gave way to a two-dimensional, calm painting style with few strong colours. The accentuated outlines and angular facial features reveal Schmidt-Rottluff’s interest in the design principles of African wooden sculptures, which then influenced his art.
