About the Acquisition
The Frankfurt banker Hugo Kessler (1856-1929) stated in his will in 1927 that the Städel Museum should inherit the forty-two works in his art collection after the death of his sister, Anna Maria Laetitia Kessler (1863-1934). An exhibition of the Kessler-Kollig bequest was held in the Städel Museum from the beginning of April until the middle of August 1936. The Kessler banking family lived in the Wiedenau. Hugo Kessler later listed Bockenheimer Landstraße 62 on his business card as his address. In addition to his activities at the bank, Kessler was also very successful in industry, for example as the Chairman of Schneider & Hanan AG in Frankfurt.
