About the Work

Earnest and inward-looking, Ida Müller gazes into the void. Her rosy cheeks and her pinned-up locks, some of which have fallen onto her forehead, alone soften the austerity of the painter Victor Müller’s young widow. Her gaze is directed neither at the onlooker nor into the distance, as is the custom in classical portraits. Thoma’s work relates the widow’s story and her character. She was also the sister of the painter Otto Scholderer and belonged to the close circle of friends of the Kronberg artist colony.
