Otto Scholderer was born in Frankfurt am Main in 1834. From 1849 to 1852, he attended the art school of the Städelsche Kunstinstitut, where he was taught by Jakob Becker and Johann David Passavant, among others. A little later, he met his future brother-in-law, the painter Victor Müller, who introduced him to French art. In 1857/58, during a study trip to Paris, Scholderer befriended Henri Fantin-Latour and Edouard Manet. He also moved in Courbet’s circle there. From 1858, the artist lived and worked mainly in Kronberg am Taunus, from 1866, in Düsseldorf. There, he met Hans Thoma, with whom he travelled to Paris in 1868. It was not until 1870 that Scholderer left the French capital again. After a short stay with Victor Müller in Munich, he moved to London in 1871. There, he painted primarily portraits and still lifes, and founded a painting school for girls in 1884. In 1899, Otto Scholderer returned to Frankfurt am Main, where he died in 1902.
