About the Work
In July 1839, the 19-year-old Friedrich Metz used the sketchbook for only a few days and drawings, almost exclusively made with pencil, to study the architecture of village and town buildings in Frankfurt (?) and its surroundings.
On the first 13 recto pages of the altogether 184 pages long book, quite sober architectural views are carefully recorded, which, according to their designations, were taken in the villages of Bergen and Seckbach, among others, which are now parts of Frankfurt. They bear witness to Metz’s efforts to realistically depict what he saw, but they also reveal the difficulties that the young draughtsman sometimes had in creating correct perspectives for his depictions. The remaining pages of the book occasionally contain a few pencil samples and two isolated charcoal sketches but are otherwise left blank.
